MCI Heritage of Golf
This PGA tournament celebrates the best of golf's tradition on
South Carolina's number one rated course, Harbour
Town golf links. With such inspiration as the 13th hole,
designed by Peter Dye's wife and the awesome final fairway stretching
from salt marshes to the renowned 18th hole at the Harbour Town
Lighthouse, every tournament player and golf player alike will remember
its heritage.
Hilton Head Island's annual PGA Tour stop began in 1969 as the
Heritage Classic, and has been known as the the MCI Heritage since
1987. Originally players competed for $100,000, last year the purse
was increased to $4.5 million.
History
Past winners include some of the biggest names in golf, Arnold
Palmer (1969), Jack Nicklaus (1975), Tom Watson (1979 and 1982),
Fuzzy Zoeller (1983 and 1986), Nick Faldo (1984) and Bernhard Langer
(1985), but if one player can lay a claim to the Heritage it is
certainly Davis Love III, who has won an amazing 5 times (1987,
1991, 1992, 1998 and 2003)!
Traffic
The Heritage is a huge event on Hilton Head, the population of
the Island can triple during the tournament so traffic can be difficult
to say the least. If you are staying in SeaPines and not planning
on watching, you may want to take this as a good time to see some
of the nearby attractions instead.
If you are not staying in Sea Pines
Plantation, please remember to allow plenty of time
to reach the tournament - especially if you are planning on doing
business in one of the many corporate tents. Traffic around the
Sea Pines Circle can be bad, but once inside the gates you may find
that it's at a virtual standstill at times. If possible use one
of the designated parking spots near the entrance and take a shuttle
to Harbour Town.
Parking
General Public Parking instructions: The traffic will flow
through the main gate of The Sea Pines Resort. You will be directed
into the general parking lots. Those with color coded and numbered

Sea Pines Resort. Security personnel will direct you to the first

the tournament back to your vehicle.
